Palette of tattoos:
In a generation full of ‘sticker tattoos’, have we lost sight of the meaning behind them? Or are we more aware than ever?
Expressing how you think, feel and simply are, as a person, has long been depicted through many forms of creativity. Humans all throughout time have been finding different ways of healing and connecting people to themselves, and tattoos has always been one of them. In Britain today over 35% of people have a tattoo, according to Compare Camp’s online survey. And this has, lately, been an ever-growing statistic.
Not only do tattoos offer a perspective of yourself to the world, but that perspective can be altered and tailored to each person’s unique soul.
Whether a person chooses an eccentric and bold portrayal on their body, or if they choose minimal and simplistic- they are choosing to wear a display of symbols, shapes and words. And this choice is to be worn for their entire lifetime.
Ancient cultures would use tattoos to represent their social standing or to commemorate special life events, and this tradition continues as people continue to use tattoos to capture moments and experiences.
Displaying pieces of art on your body, carries a great level of meaning- even the random tattoos which you decided on the day. They stick out in a person’s head and create a passion for that design.
But what actually are the meanings to certain tattoos, and do people still look into them, like they originally were meant to do? Let’s have a look.
Tattoos that have meaning:
A simple semicolon ( ; ) – a circular glyph- represents peace, love and unity. Representing a person’s willingness to continue in the face of hardship, often used by people who have suffered a mental health issue.
The mandala tattoo design has been used in various cultures for centuries, however originally developed from Hindu in Buddhist beliefs. Serving as a reminder of the infinite cycle of life, and the significance of inner growth.
An infinity symbol represents the symbol of something that is endless, living without bond. Which also adds a sense of hope, forging an unbreakable link of the past, present, and future. In spiritual terms, infinity also has concepts that world exists beyond the dimensions of humanity in the physical world- meaning there is so, so much more to life.
Tattoos visualising paw print depicts protection, and loyalty- similar to that of relationships between animals. They represent the strength of an unbreakable bond, typically between that of an owner and their pet.
The simplest tattoos are often those that carry the meanings with most depth. This includes the 3 dots in a row. Serving as one of the most recognizable symbols in tattoo culture. They are believed to represent ‘mi vida local’ which translates to ‘my crazy life’ and serves as a representation of journey and self- discovery. Conveying a depiction of perseverance in the face of struggle, whist also embracing minimalism in terms of appearance.
The is a list of only 5 tattoos, in a pool of millions, whether you are choosing them from scratch, a design only known by your brain, or if your Pinterest board is overflowing with ideas- a tattoo is powerful.
It represents you in ways you cannot represent yourself. Taking time to explore and find a tattoo that resonates with your inner self is vital to loving your tattoo forever.
Whichever you choose, carrying whatever message you choose- the girls here at Style-ish would love to know what and why.
