St Lukes new shop opens on The Moor Sheffield:
Is this the start of Sheffield's new fashion world?
On Monday 7th August St Luke’s opened their new charity shop on The Moor in Sheffield Town Centre. It’s safe to say it is definitely the beginning of a new era for charity shops. St Luke’s The Moor describes itself as “ eco- conscious” with a focus on fashion and unique looks provided by pre-loved clothing. Recently we’ve seen a surge in promotion of pre loved clothes , one of the major movements being eBay teaming up with ITV’s Love Island with hopes to increase fashion sustainability. Social media also has a niche that’s recently come to life and is being carried by content creators who enjoy upcycling and thrifting.
Over time Sheffield‘s high street fashion has without a doubt been on the downfall, with the loss of shops such as New Look, Next and Topshop. There was always going to be a battle as soon as Sheffields well known shopping centre, Meadowhall, was born. The convenience of having everything in one place under one roof proves very popular in society, so it’s no wonder Sheffield Town Centre’s High Street shops faced neglection upon the opening. But it’s never too late, with H&M and Primark bringing fashion to life on The Moor, all hope is not lost. And in a generation like todays, style is not all that matters. Fast fashions flaws are being acknowledged and sustainability is on the rise.
I visited St.Luke’s new shop on Tuesday 8th August, just one day after its opening. The shop was bursting with colourful pre loved items and eager customers wanting to expand their wardrobes. As soon as you walk in you’re greeted with a bright stand full of pieces that embody this seasons colours. Bright pink, neon greens and oranges as well as some more neutral tones for everyday wear. In each window was a different display creatively curated. Towards the back of the shop was a denim section where items such as shorts, dresses and overalls could be re-homed.
Not only was the shop full of fashionable clothing finds, there were also displays that held accessories tailored to different tastes. Ear-rings we’re hung on playing cards and necklaces were draped on the walls.
As we ventured towards home decorations, we saw the huge wall of vinyls that sat at the left of the tills. You could purchase work by artists such as Dua Lipa and Years and Years. Further on we’re several different home wear pieces including crockery sets and candle holders, vases and mug sets.
The shop over all seems a great success , fashionable and on trend whilst being sustainable and upcycling pre loved items. When you’re next in Sheffield make sure you call in! And if you find that you have any free afternoons, why not volunteer and help Sheffields fashion come back to life.
