Is this season’s colour the key to a greener planet? or should we say a bluer planet?
Before the nights begin to get longer, and winter starts to turn to Spring, there’s one essential thing we all need to be aware of. This season's new colour: Blue. And the added bonus? It’s so versatile that we can all create our own style, and pair it with what trends we love best.
In the SS24 Fashion Weeks last year, we saw Blue walk the runway in several different designer shows. For example, JW Anderson, Fashion Awards winner for Designer of the Year, presented a blue figure-hugging dress complimented by cutouts. A thriving trend that has been carried into 2024. Bottega Veneta displayed its take on the colour through a body con dress elevated by immaculately placed fringes to add texture. Another example would be Alaïa’s sheer garment which was the perfect powder blue complete with ruffled sleeves and a high neck. Other labels such as Armani and Proenza Schouler hopped on the blue bandwagon. Through the designs seen on the catwalk, it’s clear that blue is the perfect colour for Spring, it’s a hue that can be paired with other textures and trends to ensure you’re getting the most out of your wardrobe.
So why for Spring?
Blue radiates feelings of tranquillity and calmness whilst symbolising the clear skies that we see from now and then in March to May. It can also radiate open energy, representing new beginnings and clean slates. The light and airy hue means it’s perfect for lightweight garments designed to keep you cool as temperatures begin to rise. And as we are in the UK, and don’t always get the glorious spring sun, blue is compatible with many other colours allowing layering. Yet another 2023 trend that has seen the new year in.
It's almost as if blue is allowing sustainable fashion to take on a new style. Because of its neutral tones, blue can be worn with pretty much everything. Meaning fast fashion doesn’t always accompany a new trend, and neither does breaking the bank.
To show you further, take double denim as an example. 2023 saw many of us pairing our favourite jeans with a matching denim jacket or even a corset-style top. With Spring having cooler days, denim perfectly fits in with the new colour scheme and provides further warmth. Reduce, reuse, and recycle ladies and gents, dig out last year’s denim and prepare to be on trend for yet another spring/ summer season. If you are due a new pair of jeans because humans aren’t made to stay the same shape forever, look into stone-washed jeans as these are the perfect shade of Spring blue.
If you’re struggling to style blue, try using different shades but similar fabrics that complement each other or try a matching two-piece. Pinstripe is still popular and extremely complimentary when worn in a blue shade.
It’s safe to say that a big part of 2023 fashion was nail art/ colours. Pinterest’s 2024 Trend Prediction Forecast Report showed that the search for blue nails had gone up by 260%. Whether you’re thinking to brighten up a classic French tip or go for a lively chrome look. Blue is the answer.
I guess the real question is… Is 2024 the year for capsule wardrobes? Think about it, a lot of 2023 trends have been carried into 2024. By pairing a blue staple with different trends (clothing from last year) you can refresh the look each time you get dressed. The blue pinstripe suit from last year's Rita Ora x Primark? On trend. The mesh body suit you wore in Ibiza last year. Pair it with a blue bralette. Refreshed and on-trend. The double denim two-piece that kept you warm on a night out last April? On-trend. Your favourite black dress that needs a pop of colour through accessories (2023 trend)? Refresh with a blue bag that will become part of your long-term wardrobe. So yes, 2024 is THE year for capsule wardrobes, all thanks to this season's colour. Blue.
